Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of dyeing time of the hot dip galvanizing process of zinc (zn) coating materials on construction steels with low carbon on layer thickness, microstructure, hardness tests, and corrosion rates. The stages of the process carried out include the polishing, pickling, rinsing, fluxing process then the hot dip galvanizing process is carried out with variations in dyeing time of 1 minute, 3 minutes, and 5 minutes at a temperature of 420-440oC. In the eta layer (η), zeta layer (ξ), and delta layer (δ) it can be seen that the longer the immersion time, the thicker the layer. While the gamma layer (Γ) cannot be measured its thickness value so that it is considered not to experience additional layers. The results of the study obtained a layer thickness at a time of 1 minute of 45.80 μm, 3 minutes of 100.23 μm, and a time of 5 minutes of 161.82 μm. So the longer the dyeing time, the more the thickness of the layer formed increases. The results of the hardness test were obtained at a time of 1 minute of 99.5 HV, 3 minutes of 105 HV, and 5 minutes of 106.53 HV. So the longer the dyeing time, the harder the resulting layer. The results of testing the corrosion rate with variations in dyeing time were obtained on raw material of 2,651 mpy, 1 minute time of 2,224 mpy, 3 minutes time of 1,906 mpy, and 5 minutes time of 1,669 mpy. It can be concluded that after the hot dip galvanizing process, the steel specimen experiences a decrease in the corrosion rate value and the longer the dyeing time results in a smaller corrosion rate value.
