Abstract
The purposes of this research are to reveal the types of sympathy and em-pathy and to clarify the intention of sympathy and empathy utterance addressed to the care of dying patient of covid-19. This research employs a descriptive quali-tative and using sociopragmatic approach. The focuses of this research are sympa-thy and empathy expression in the Facebook comments which posted by Un-known Fact addressed to the care of dying patient of Covid-19. The researcher uses the theory of McDougal (in The Psychology of Sympathy, 1991) and Goleman (1996) to reveal the type of sympathy and empathy and the theory of Searle (1979) to clarify the intention of sympathy empathy. The results show: 1) there are two types of sympathy utterance such as: passive and active sympathy. 2) The researcher found 3 types of empathy expression they are: cognitive, emo-tional and compassionate empathy. Social media users commonly perform emo-tional empathy rather than the others. 3) The researcher also found 10 types of in-tention by using the theory of Searle. They are: sympathizing, thanking, expressing of pain, wishing, praise, asserting, informing, blaming, challenge, and suggesting. So, it can be concluded that the social media users performing the sympathy and empathy and what they intend to the care of dying patient of covid-19. Through this research, the researcher expects that this research can complete the previous research about sympathy and empathy that employing in the social media.
