Abstract

This current study researched the topics and functions of compliment expressions uttered by YouTube users on Soft White Underbelly YouTube channel. The objectives of this research are to categorize topics and functions of compliments expressions found on Soft White Underbelly YouTube comment. This research used the descriptive qualitative method with the object was the compliment expressions, and the subjects were YouTube users. The researcher collected the data using the documentation technique. In analysing data, the researcher carried out the stages; data collecting, data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions. The result of this research found topics of appearance compliments, topics of ability compliments, topics of performance compliments, and topics of personality compliments. Personality is one of the most common topics for compliment expressions uttered by YouTube users. Moreover, there are utterances to show admiration or approbation, utterances to inspire or motivate someone, utterances to convey good feedback, utterances to strengthen or replace other forms of communication, and utterances to lessen the impact of criticism. The function of compliment expression to show admiration is one of the compliment expressions that are most common used. It can be concluded that YouTube users praised the personality of the interviewee a lot because she has an extraordinary personality in accepting her past and living a dark life.
