Abstract

This study aims to analyze the teaching strategies used by the English teacher in teaching writing in the seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga, to describe the procedures for implementing the teacher's strategies in teaching writing, to investigate the teachers’ reasons in applying the teaching strategies, and analyze the teachers’ challenges during teaching writing. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method as the design in this study. The data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used was from Miles & Huberman such as data reduction, data display, and verification. The results showed that the teacher's strategies in teaching writing were Grammar Translation Method, Game Based Learning, and Picture Media Strategy. GTM was applied to improve grammar, vocabulary, and being able to translate sentences, GBL was used to enrich students' vocabulary through crossword puzzle, and picture media strategy is applied as a student exercise in describing an object through pictures. The teachers’ reasons used those strategies as a variation of learning, as fun learning, and help to increase students’ motivation to learn vocabulary, grammar, and writing. The challenges experienced by the English teacher were students didn’t know the meaning of certain sentences, students were lacking in grammar and vocabulary, and students easily forgot the subject matter.
