Abstract

Earthquake is one of natural phenomenon which can be devastating and overpowered the man-made infrastructure. Indonesia has a great risk of earthquake because located along the meeting point of three tectonics plate, Indo-Australia, Eurasia, and Pacific plate. Engineering solution has been developed for centuries to overcome the effect of earthquake. Force Based Design is one of the methods that has been used a lot in designing earthquake resistant structure which focuses on elastic characteristic of structure. Direct displacement-based design focuses on the displacement capacity of the structure resulting in more accurate representation of structure behaviour due to inelastic behaviour consideration. Study conducted by modelling two UMS Research Center building with identical specification located in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia then evaluated using nonlinear static pushover analysis. Seismic design code refers to SNI 1726:2019. Structure detailing code refer to SNI 2847:2019. Performance evaluation code refers to FEMA 440 and ASCE 41-13. Research showed that FBD has bigger base shear force than DDBD in x-direction with difference of 6.909% but lower in y-direction with a significant difference of 84.894%. FBD and DDBD methods differences also presents in structure drift and performance level. When evaluated using ASCE 41-13 displacement coefficient method, both structure reach performance level of damage control and FBD has greater drift ratio with difference of 0.0378 % in X-direction and 0.9645 % in Y-direction. Significant differences presents when performance level evaluated using FEMA-440 equivalent linearization method. Both structure reach performance level of damage control for x-direction with difference of 0.1644 % whereas y-direction reach life safety for FBD compared to damage control for DDBD with difference of 34.738 %.
