Abstract
In Indonesia, English has become a subject that should be learned from Elementary, Junior High School, to Senior High School levels, in order that the students can interact properly using English. And in order to equip them with knowledge of English, the skill should be directly practiced. However, in the current pandemic situation, learning to speak is certainly a difficult thing to practice. This study aims to explore obstacles students face in learning speaking in a virtual classroom, identify the factors that make it difficult for the students, and find out how students strategies to deal with the obstacles. The study is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects were students from the twelfth grade in the social sciences department at SMA Negeri 1 Kartasura. The data of this study were collected using interviews, observation, and document analysis. The researcher applied interactive technique comprising data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions/verification techniques in analyzing the data. The results of this study show that the obstacles in learning speaking in virtual classroom are not much different from the obstacles experienced by students when learning offline, namely, limited number of vocabulary, influency, and lack of pronunciation. The factors obstacles are a poor internet connection, unsupportive environment, lack of virtual meeting with the teacher, lack of motivation. The solution to the problems faced are learning to use videos on YouTube, re-recording material, looking for signals, learning using English films and songs.
