Abstract
This research focuses on the analysis of verb phrases. The aims of this research are: (1) to classify the kinds of phrasal verb are employed in the Hacksaw Ridge movie. (2) to find out translation strategies used by subtitler to subtitling the phrasal verbs in the Hacksaw Ridge movie. The data of this descriptive research are phrases, clauses, and sentences in which there are phrasal verb contained in Hacksaw Ridge movie, directed by Mel Gibson. The data were analyzed using McCarthy and O’Dell theory (2007) to classify types of verb phrases and Mona Baker's theory of translation strategy (1992). Based on the data analysis, the first finding shows that there are 191 phrasal verbs found in Hacksaw Ridge movie subtitle. They are intransitive phrasal verb which has 99 data. Besides that, in transitive phrasal verb it has 92 amount data which has classified into two categories; (1) separable transitive phrasal verb with have amount 36 of 92 data, and (2) inseparable transitive phrasal verb with 56 of 92 data. In the second finding is the translation strategies used by subtitler to transfer the phrasal verbs in the Hacksaw Ridge movie. The second result indicates that there are four translation strategies used by subtitler in translating the phrasal verb, there are translation by a more general word, translation by paraphrase using related word strategy, translation by paraphrase using unrelated word strategy, and translation by omission strategy. The subtitler also applied a literal translation by Newmark, which are focuses on translated literally from source language into target language.
