Abstract

Cast aluminum 354 has superior mechanical properties including good toughness, corrosion resistance, and weldability but has a weakness in terms of strength. Cast aluminum 354 is a heat treatable alloy wherein the increase in strength can be done by heat treatment. One effective method to increase its strength is by heat treatment. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of heat treatment on temperature and holding time of cast aluminum 354 on microstructure and hardness values. This study uses heat treatment with a solution temperature of 525°C with a holding time of 10 hours and quenched with water, then artificially aged at 155°C with variations in holding time for 5 hours and 10 hours then cooled at room temperature. The results of this study indicate the value of hardness in the raw material is 114.94 VHN and there is a decrease in the quenching process to 103.49 VHN. and increased hardness in the artificial aging process with a temperature of 155 o C with variations in holding time of 5 hours and 10 hours to 116.02 VHN at 5 hours and 117.96 at 10 hours, this is because the material has not been over aged. From the observation of the microstructure, it shows a significant difference in grain size between the raw material and the material undergoing heat treatment.
