Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that in the modern era there are many phenomena of moral crises that occur in society, such as juvenile delinquency, decreased respect for parents and so on. So character education needs to be developed to instill character in children. Character is said to be good if it includes three aspects of character, namely moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral acting. Character building is not only through formal education but also informal and non-formal education. One of the non-formal educational institutions, namely the Barokah Islamic Boarding School, Sukoharjo, has its own method of instilling character in its students. The purpose of this study are 1) to describe the method of instilling character in students used at the Barokah Sukoharjo Islamic boarding school in the 2021/2022 academic year, 2) to describe the character values instilled in the students at the Barokah Sukoharjo Islamic boarding school in the 2021/2022 academic year. The research method used is a type of field research with a phenomenological approach. The data collection techniques used were direct interviews, non-participatory observations, documentation with inductive data analysis techniques through three data analysis lines, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that 1) the method of character building in students applied at the Barokah Islamic boarding school is teaching, habituation, advice, exemplary, and enforcement of rules. 2) Character values instilled in students at the Barokah Islamic Boarding School are religious, tolerance, honest, disciplined, creative, independent, hard work, democratic, curiosity, national spirit, love for the homeland, respect for achievement, friendly/communicative, love peace, love to read, care for the environment, care about social, and responsibility. These character values can be instilled through the character planting method applied at the Barokah Islamic boarding school.
