Abstract

The high population growth causes the opportunity to get a job in the formal sector to become smaller, thus encouraging some people to work or open a business in the informal sector, one of which is street vendors. The study purposes were 1) described the characteristics of street vendors in Alun-Alun Kidul Kota Surakarta; 2) Analyzed the mobility pattern carried out by street vendors in Alun-Alun Kidul Kota Surakarta; and 3) Analyzed the factors that drive the social mobility of street vendors street vendors in Alun-Alun Kidul Kota Surakarta. The study was applied a survey research type with the research target being street vendors in Alun-Alun Kidul Kota Surakarta. The sample determination was used the quota sampling technique. The research data were consisted of primary and secondary data. The collecting data method was used a survey of questionnaire. The data processing process includes editing, tabulation, and coding. Data analysis methods include frequency tables, descriptive analysis, and interactive analysis. Based on the data analysis results, it can be concluded that 1) the general characteristics of street vendors in Alun-Alun Kidul Surakarta includes of men aged 20-40 years who have 3 family dependents. During the pandemic, the average income of street vendors in Alun-Alun Kidul Surakarta was decreased significantly. Trading experience is in the range of 5-10 years by selling every day at 15.00-22.00. 2) The mobility pattern of street vendors in Alun-Alun Kidul Surakarta was dominated by traders from Pasar Kliwon sub-district using motorbikes to commute. 3) The main factor that causes the mobility of street vendors in Alun-Alun Kidul Surakarta is economic motive, namely the large opportunity to sell in Alun-Alun Kidul Surakarta.
