Abstract

The phenomenon called abstain always happened in every election of the country that use democratic system. This research focusses on knowing about understanding, experience, and motives of students in the Communication Science major in Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta regarding the abstain, where the audience finally choose not to participate in political activities. How is the construction of meaning towards abstain formed among students in the Communication Science major in Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. This research using phenomenology theory according to Alfred Shutz to knowing the construction meaning about abstain through 2 main concepts in-order-to-motive and because-motive. In this research the researcher decides to choose informants who claimed to be abstainers, they were students of the Communication Science major in Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta generation 2016-2018. This research using descriptive qualitative research. Method of collecting data using interview, and the data validity technique used source triangulation. The data analysis technique used Miles and Huberman. The results showed that abstain is an act of not deciding or voting during an election that is neither planned nor planned. This study shows that informants as the communicators have two categories of motives. The first is because-of-motives, refers to the informant's experience of disappointment with policies, political promises, conditions of division and repressive actions that have been experienced. The second is in-order-to-motives, which refers to the abstain act itself which is interpreted as a form of political communication, which means a form of protest in order to attract the attention of the government and other political actors to make a change
