Abstract

Impression management is widely used today, especially in social media like Instagram. Instagram emerged as another web-based medium that was quickly accepted by its users because of its built-in features, namely hashtags and likes. Impression management can be done by anyone, one example of this Instagram user is Merry Riana. This research was conducted to analyze impression management by Merry Riana through Instagram @merryriana social media. A qualitative descriptive content analysis method was used to analyze uploads from 21 January 2022 - 1 March 2022. To find out the results of this study, researchers used the Impression Management Theory. There are 5 strategies introduced by Jones and Pittman in showing themselves through social media, namely, Ingratiation, Self Promotion, Exemplification, Intimidation, and Supplication. While the tactics most frequently used are exemplification, self promotion, and ingratiation, because these are the best components to make oneself appear more attractive and to become a competent person as a motivator.
