Abstract

This research studies compliment expression found on Ariana Grande's Instagram account. The aims of this research are to 1) classify the topics of compliment found on Ariana Grande's Instagram comment section and 2) identify the functions of compliment found on Ariana Grande's Instagram comment section. This research used a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis approach. The subject of this research was Instagram users who express compliment in the comments section of Ariana Grande's Instagram. The object of this research was compliment expression. This research used document analysis in techniques of collecting the data. The technique of analyzing data was carried out in four stages, namely data collection, data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that 1) there are 4 topics of compliment found, they are appearance, ability, personality, and possession. The most common topic is appearance. 2) there are 4 functions of compliment used, the functions are to express admiration, to establish solidarity, to replace other speech acts, and to reinforce the desired behavior. The most frequently used function is to express admiration.
