Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the panel configuration that has strong resistance and to determine the ballistic performance of the Al2O3 and Weldox 460 E Steel panel configurations on the criteria for Depth of Penetration, Deflection and Velocity Ballistic Limit as well as projectile and panel deformation. In this study, to determine the accuracy of the simulations that have been made, verification of the data from previous research simulations by Dey et al. The method used in this study is based on the finite element method with the software used is ANSYS/Explicit Dynamic solver AUTODYN 18.1 The modelling used is simplified into 2D Axisymmetric. In this ballistic test, various configurations of Al2O3 and Weldox 700 E steel panels were carried out as well as variations in speed. There are 7 variations of panel configurations, namely W12, A5W5, A5W10, A10W5, A10W10, A12W12 and A15W15. To calculate the mechanical behaviour of Weldox 700 E materials, Johnson and Cook parameters are used, while for Al2O3 materials, Johnson Holmquist (JH2) Strength is used. The simulation results obtained show that the A12W12 and A15W15 panel configurations are able to withstand NIJ Type IV standard projectiles. The A12W12 panel configuration has a DOP value of 23 mm, a deflection value of 4.3 mm and a Vbl value of 954.69 m/s. while the best panel configuration is A15W15 with a DOP value of 21 mm, a deflection value of 1.4 mm and a Vbl value of 1345.9 m/s. it can be concluded that the configuration of A15W15 are the best panel configurations that are able to withstand NIJ type IV projectiles.
