Abstract

Openness to trade is the result of the total number of exports and imports of goods and services measured as a share of gross domestic product. Batam City as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is an area that has certain boundaries and is unique in geoeconomics and geostrategy. Trade openness that occurs in the city of Batam tends to be slow and has decreased from 2001-2020, causing the economy in Batam to become less stable. This study aims to estimate the effect of economic growth, labor and foreign investment on trade openness in Batam City in 2001-2020 using multiple regression analysis using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) approach. The results of this study indicate that the variable number of workers has a negative effect on openness. while GRDP and foreign investment have no effect on trade openness in Batam City in 2021–2020. The suggestion that can be given in this research is that the Batam City government is expected to further improve the quality of the workforce through various training activities and make policies that favor entrepreneurs who trade or export which in the end investors are interested in investing their capital so that it can increase trade openness and growth. economy in Batam City.
