Abstract

Metabolic syndrome (MetS), is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by several criteria, namely central obesity, increased triglyceride levels, total cholesterol levels, increased blood glucose levels, and increased blood pressure. The Mediterranean diet, which is rich in α -linoleic acid, dietary bioactive phenolics, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances, is believed to have cardioprotective effects that can reduce the risk of MetS. This study aims to analyze articles on the effectiveness of the Mediterranean diet against MetS in adults and the elderly. This study uses a literature review method with 10 articles (2012-2022) in PubMed indexed in Q1 of 9 articles and Q2 of 1 article. The keywords used were the Mediterranean diet, adults, the elderly, and the metabolic syndrome or MetS. The results of the analysis of 100% articles have a respondent's age range from 52 to 66.5 years, with 30% of articles indicating that the most dominant gender is female and 10% of articles indicating that the dominant gender is male. A total of 80% showed a decrease in BMI (p-value <0.05) and 30% of articles showed a decrease in waist circumference (p-value <0.05). A total of 50% of articles stated that the Mediterranean diet was effective in reducing three of the five MetS criteria. A total of 50% of articles stated that the Mediterranean diet intervention was effective in reducing three of the five criteria for MetS
