Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the shape of the pin tool on physical and mechanical properties and microstructure in the connection of 6061 series alumunium plateand 6061 series alumunium using friction stir welding (FSW) method. The welding process uses variation in the shape of the pin, cylindrical, and triangular cylindrical tool pin section with a rotational speed of 900 rpm and a feed rate od 30 mm/minute. The material used in this study is the 6061 series alumunium plate with a length of 150 mm, width 70 mm and guess 3 mm. furthermore, the result of welding joints performed tensile testing, Vickers hardnes testing and microstructure photographs. The result of this study indicate that the pin tool affect the mechanical properties of the friction stir welding result. The triangle tool pin has the gratest tensile stress of 459.92 MPa, while the smallest tensile stress on the square tool pin with a value of 276.7 MPa and the value of the tensile stress of the taoered cylinder tool pin is 412.66 MPa. The highest strain value using the triangle tool pin is 35.92%, while the smalles strain value ises the square tool pin which is 20.48% and the tapered cylinder tool pin has a strain value of 27.58%. the highest hardness value is in the welding area with a value of 23.84 VHN using the triangle tool pin while the lowest hardness value is in the haz area with a value of 17.52 VHN on the tapered cylinder tool pin.
