Abstract

Background: LBP is one of the musculoskeletal complaints, which continues for a period of 3 months and eventually develops into chronic low back pain (CLBP). Chronic low back pain itself is a complaint of chronic pain in the lower back area that makes sufferers experience pain for a long enough duration, resulting in limited activity when carrying out a movement or mobilization. Several previous studies reported that Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) can reduce pain intensity. This study aims to determine and analyze the effect of TENS in reducing pain in patients with chronic low back pain. Methods: A critical review was conducted by searching for and identifying scientific articles of the type of Randomized Control Trial (RCT) from 2011-2021 which discussed the effect of TENS on chronic low back pain sufferers. Articles were searched through PEDro, Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, DOAC, Europe PMC. Of the 695 articles found, 7 articles were selected which will then be reviewed. Results: The 7 selected articles used quite varied types of TENS. Pulse Burst TENS is more widely used. 7 articles reported that TENS has a significant pain-reducing effect in patients with chronic LBP where electric current has a direct effect at the cellular level resulting in peripheral nerve cell excitation and affecting the system level, which is indicated by the release of endogenous analgesic substances such as serotonin, endorphins, and enkephalins. Conclusion: Based on the results of a critical review of the 7 articles above, it was concluded that TENS is effective and safe in reducing pain in patients with chronic LBP so that patients can carry out activities again without any limitation of movement.
