Abstract

Rahmatan lil 'alamin is the theme of the Koran which is always an interesting discussion, especially among Muslims. However, the glory of Islam is often not in line with reality, Islam sometimes appears with a face of wrath in the hands of its own people. The fact that is of concern is that the violence that occurred in the name of Islam, made the beautiful face of Islam hurt. The commentators provide varied interpretations of the verse rahmatan lil 'alamin. Because of the uniqueness of these differences in interpretation, researchers are interested in discussing the concept of rahmatan lil 'alamin in Muhammad bin Jarir Ath-Thabari's Ath-Thabari interpretation and Muhammad Husain Thabataba'i's interpretation of Al-Mizan. This qualitative research with literature study uses a comparative descriptive approach. The results of the research on the interpretation were found that according to at-Tābari rahmatan lil 'alamin is the sending of the prophet Muhammad to bring the teachings of Islam is a mercy for all nature, namely believers and unbelievers. Meanwhile, according to Tābātabā’i rahmatan lil 'alamin is the sending of the prophet Muhammad to all humans to believe in Allah by bringing the teachings of Islam which are applied through the life of the prophet Muhammad. There is one aspect of difference and two aspects of similarities. The difference is the aspect of the form of rahmatan lil 'alamin while the similarity is the aspect of the meaning of rahmatan lil 'alamin and the aspect of the object of rahmatan lil 'alamin. This research is useful to add to the treasures of al-Qur'an research and contribute to a deeper understanding of the concept of rahmatan lil 'alamin.
