Abstract

This study aims to determine the sengon wood charcoal in the heat treatment process using the carburizing on SS 400 steel on its mechanical properties and microstructure. In study the media to be used in the carburizing process of sengon wood charcoal was 70% and 30% Na₂CO₃ catalyst. The temperature used during this process is 850⁰C for 60 minutes. While the variations of the quenching media are SAE 10W-30 oil and water. The surface hardness value with the carburizing method using water quenching media had a hardness value 593,28 VHN. In the microstructure test result that have been carried out in this study with an enlargement of 200 times 50 μm, it is known that in quenching specimens using SAE 10W-40 oil and water, pearlite is been more because the carbon content in the carburized specimens increases. In raw material, there is more ferrite than pearlite, because the carbon content in the specimen without the carburizing process is very little, so that the carbon atoms in the specimen dissolved in the Fe atom to from a solid solution.
