Abstract

Saron is a traditional Javanese musical instrument in the form of blades made of bronze, namely an alloy of copper (Cu) and tin (Sn), with an alloy ratio of three to ten where 23% tin (Sn) and 77% copper (Cu) with manual forging processes and quenching process. In general, the cooling process uses water cooling media. This study aims to compare the hardness and roughness values of the saron tone 5 (ma) blade from three quenching methods, namely using water, oil, and room temperature. And to find out the value of the microstructure and the compositional content of the 5 (ma) saron blade. From the results of the hardness test, there are differences between water, oil, and air cooling media. Where the hardness value with water cooling media is 186 kgf/mm², oil is 214 kgf/mm² and air is 200 kgf/mm². From the results of the surface roughness test, the following results are obtained, for the roughness value of saron blades using water cooling media has a roughness value of 0.3017 m, for oil cooling media 0.3579 m, and for air cooling media has a value of 0.6732 m. The results of the microstructure test have differences for the copper (Cu) structure. And the results of the chemical composition test there are differences in the percentage of copper (Cu) and tin (Sn) compositions, where for water cooling media the content of Cu is 77.20 % and Sn is 22.57 %, for oil cooling media the content of Cu is 77.75 % and Sn. 22.06%, for the air cooling media the content of Cu is 76.71% and Sn is 23.04%.
