Abstract

Politeness plays an important role in human communication. Politeness is the key in improving interpersonal relationships and communication. In its application, Politeness prevents conflicts and misunderstandings when communicating. This study focuses on (1) the types of politeness maxims and (2) the scale of politeness maxims used by the characters in Inside Out movie. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The data in this study were utterances containing elements of politeness maxims and the scale of politeness maxims taken from used from the dialogues used by the characters in the movie. The data analysis used the theory of politeness principles proposed by Leech (1983). The results of this study show that, there are six types of maxims used by the characters in Inside Out movie i.e. sympathy maxim 5.5%, modesty maxim 5.5%, generosity maxim 11.1%, agreement maxim 22.2%, approbation maxim 22.2% and tact maxim 33.3 %. In addition, there are also five scale of maxims i.e. optionally scale 2.2%, authority scale 2.2%, cost-benefit scale 19%, indirectness scale 30.5% and the last social distance scale 39%. In conclusion this study shows that the politeness maxim in Inside out movie used by the characters who has the most dominant type of politeness maxim used by the characters in Inside Out movie is the tact maxim. And for the most dominant scale of politeness is social distance scale. The reason is because the tact maxim is implemented by directive and commissive utterances, the characters use a lot of utterances that contain directive utterances and commissive utterances. Another reason is because most of the characters have reduced the benefit for them self and maximize benefit for the interlocutor. Furthermore, the most dominant scale of politeness is social distance scale. The reason is the relationship between the characters is closer, and most of them are on the same social distance or level. So, they used the social distance scale more often.
