Abstract

Anemia is most susceptible to occur in adolescent girls and it has a strong impact on health during the reproductive period. The global prevalence of anemia in adolescents is 29.4%. One of the factors that caused anemia is not used to breakfast which will lead to a lack of nutrient intake, and a lack of protein intake which will inhibit the transport of iron and cause low hemoglobin levels. This study aimed to find out the correlation between breakfast habits and protein intake with the suspected cases of anemia in adolescent girls in Sukoharjo district. This study used an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach on 110 respondents from 3 SMPN in Sukoharjo who had met the study inclusion criteria. The sampling was selected by multistage sampling. The data of breakfast habits were obtained by recall 24 hours for 7 consecutive days, the data of protein intake with semi-quantitative FFQ (SQ-FFQ), and the suspected cases data of anemia based on the early detection questionnaire of anemia signs. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that 83.6% of girls who were not used to breakfast, 70.0% of girls with less protein intake, and 34.5% of girls who had suspected anemia. There was a correlation between breakfast habits (p= 0.022) and there was no correlation between protein intake (p= 0.484) and the suspected cases of anemia. Getting used to breakfast and adequate protein intake are protective factors of the suspected cases of anemia (RP= 0.284; CI= 0.075-1.075); (RP= 0.824; CI= 0.484-1.403). There was a correlation between breakfast habits and the suspected cases of anemia and there was no correlation between protein intake and the suspected cases of anemia. Based on this research, it is hoped that further researchers can compare the effectiveness of research questionnaires in detecting anemia by checking hemoglobin levels.
