Abstract

Background: Cigarette is one of the tubaccos intended to be burned, smoked and/or inhaled including kretek cigarretes, white ciggeretes, cigars or other forms produced from the plants nicotiana tabacum, nicotiana rustica and other species or their synthetics whose smoke contains nicotine and tar, with or without tobacco products. Smoking is a major cause of respiratory disease that can affect immune responses throughout childhood and adulthood. There are so many chemicals contained in a cigarette, but what we often hear are nicotine and TAR. This content contributes to the regulation of sleep and wake cycles, meaning that smoking alone will affect the activity of sleep and wake patterns. Objective: To determine the effect of smoking on the quality of sleep in students. Research Methods: The type collected using the online Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for industrial engineering students. Results: Based on statistical tests conducted, the results showed that there was a significant relationship and influence between smoking and sleep quality in students with a p-value of 0.000 <0.05. Conclusion: that there is a significant relationship and influence between smoking and sleep quality in college students.
