Abstract

Introducing: The frequency of consumption of salty food is a description of the level of frequency of individuals in consuming foods that are predominantly salty or foods containing high salt.The incidence of hypertension is a condition in which blood pressure rises due to disturbances in the blood vessels which is characterized by a systolic pressure of 140 mmHg and or a diastolic pressure of 90 mmHg with three measurements in different periods. Objective: This study aimed to determine the correlation between the frequency of consumption of salty foods and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly in Province Riau Research Methodology:. Riskesdas data was analytic with a cross-sectional design.The sample used was the elderly with the age of more than 60 years in Riau Province, totaling 153 people. Data on gender, age, frequency of salty food, blood pressure were obtained from the results of Riskesdas 2018. Statistical test of the correlation applied chi square. Results: The frequency of salty food which was included in the frequent category was 45.7%, the incidence of hypertension in Riau Province was 46.4%. Test The correlation between the frequency of eating salty and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly had a p value of 0.006 (p value <0.05). Conclusion: There was a correlation between the frequency of eating salty and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly in Province Riau.
