Abstract

Education is the most important need of every individual which is a process to change human behavior and abilities as a renewal or innovation of thinking, one alternative to develop it through mathematics subjects at school. In the 2013 revised 2017 curriculum, mathematics learning is expected to not only use the ability to count in doing test questions but also to use reasoning and analysis skills in solving problems (Suryapuspitarini et al., 2018). According to Permana (2019), the HOTS questions are questions that train students to think at a high level, think critically, and think creatively in dealing with the problems of everyday life. The students' errors that will be analyzed are in solving problems on the Two Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV) material. Students' ability to solve HOTS SPLDV questions can be analyzed using Newman's theory. According to Anne Newman (1977), there are errors in description questions, namely: (1) reading, (2) understanding the meaning of a problem, (3) transformation, (4) process skills, and (5) writing answers. Based on the description above, the researcher intends to conduct research to analyze student errors in solving the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) material on the Two Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV). This study aims to describe student errors in solving HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) questions for SPLDV (Two Variable Linear Equation System) questions and to describe the factors causing student errors in solving HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) questions for SPLDV (Equation System) questions. Linear Two Variables). This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects in this study were class VIII A students of SMP Negeri 7 Pati in the academic year 2020/2021. Data collection techniques used are test and interview instruments. The result of this research is a group of high-ability subjects who make mistakes in understanding, transforming, solving process skills, and writing answers. The error group of the capable subject is making a mistake in understanding, transforming, and solving process skills. The group of low-ability subjects made mistakes in understanding, transforming, solving process skills, and writing answers. The causes of student errors are students who do not know what is known and asked, rush to the stage of the completion process, are not careful in calculations, forget to write conclusions and are not accustomed to writing conclusions.
