Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of adding copper with a mesh size of 40 on 1100 aluminum spot welding. The research conducted was SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) test, hardness test, and microstructure test. The spot welding process applies a current of 9500A with a time of 7,5s. In cutting the spesimen, the ASME QW-462.9 standard was used, and the micro Vickers hardness test was used the ASTM E 384 standard. The results of the SEM and EDX tests show that the copper filler can enter the aluminum area which has cavities. However, there are some defects that occur such as porosity, cracks, and voids. As for the EDX results, there are several compositions of the welding results, namely Al = 15.12%, Cu = 51.61%, C = 17.78%, Na = 15.50%. The results of the research on the hardness test showed that the highest hardness value was in the nugget area of 48.99 VHN, then in the HAZ area of 40.23 VHN, and the last one was in the bae metal of 37.08 VHN. Then on the results of the microstructure test in the nugget area, there are fine grains compared to the HAZ and base metal areas.
