Abstract

The construction of men and women roles cannot be separated from norms and mass media. Media are one channel in which individuals learn about gender roles in the family. In this case, this study aims to identify how advertisement as a mass media product presents the father figure in the family. This study used the descriptive qualitative method and content analysis techniques. The unit of analysis was audio and visual. The results of the study showed that a father had more roles than the head of the family. Further, fathers became the mother's partner both in the domestic and public areas. Then, fathers have roles as a provider of physical and psychological needs of children to support the children development. The involvement of fathers in educating children is important as it will have an impact on the children’s cognitive, language, and socio-emotional skills.
