Abstract

Background : The results of a preliminary survey on 30 female students at Nutrition Science University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta showed that 96.7% of respondents experienced dysmenorrhea and 56.7% of female students consumed fast food in the frequent category (≥8x/week). The high content of saturated fatty acids in fast food can cause disruption of the progesterone metabolism system in the menstrual cycle. Objective: This study aimed to determine the correlation between the frequency of consuming fast food and the incidence of dysmenorrhea in nutrition science students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Methodology: This research was an observational study with an online cross sectional research design. Data on the frequency of consuming fast food used FFQ for the last 1 month and data on the incidence of dysmenorrhea were obtained by filling out a questionnaire via google form. The research subjects were 69 people who were taken by simple random sampling. The statistical test used to analyze the correlation was the Chi-Square Test. Result: The results of the univariate analysis on the frequency of consuming fast food in the frequent category (≥8x/week) was 56.5% with the types of fast food namely fried chicken, instant noodles, sausage and soft drinks. The incidence of dysmenorrhea who experienced dysmenorrhea was 87.0% with a pain level of 1-3 on a scale of 39%. The results of the bivariate analysis between the frequency of fast food and the incidence of dysmenorrhea were obtained (p = 0.003) and the RR value was 1.32 (CI 1.06-1.65). Conclusion: There was a correlation between the frequency of consuming fast food and the incidence of dysmenorrhea in Nutrition Science students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta.
