Abstract

Casting is the process of smelting metal materials to be printed according to the wishes of the maker. In the casting there is also the mixing of two or more metal elements. In the casting process many use sand casting and metal molds (permanent mold casting). Different molds will affect the casting cooling rate. The cooling rate in the solidification process using sand molds and metal molds is measured using thermocouples connected with the data logger. The purpose of this study is to find out the comparison of temperature cooling casting using sand molds and metal molds with FCD materials in the FC25 casting process. In this study, the furnace used in the smelting process of gray cast iron using induction furnace. Before pouring into the mold, the melted gray cast iron is inoculated by adding Silicon (Si) and Manganese (Mn), and without inoculation. Gray cast iron that has been solid with inoculation and without inoculation is carried out tests of chemical composition, microstructure, hardness, and SEM EDS. The test results showed a decrease in the average temperature of the sand mold of 531.079 ºC for 100 minutes, for the metal mold it was 298.3135 ºC for 81 minutes. Comparison of cooling rates using sand molds and metal molds is faster using metal molds with a difference of 19 minutes. Vickers hardness test results at the top of 123.826667 HV, middle 168.846667 HV, below 132.6 HV.
