Abstract

This study aimed to describe students errors in solving mathematics problems based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) on one-variable linear equation material in terms of initial abilities. This type of research was descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this research were seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Karangpandan. The selection of subjects was done by giving an initial ability test to 30 class VII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Karangpandan which then from the test results were selected 6 research subjects based on the existing categories then the six subjects were given HOTS questions. The instrument used is the initial ability test which contains 2 essay questions, the HOTS written test which contains 3 description questions and interview guidelines. The data analysis technique was done by reducing the data, presenting the data, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data used technical triangulation by comparing the results of student work with the results of interviews that had been conducted. The errors analyzed were categorized using the Newman procedure. The results of this study indicate that students with high and moderate initial abilities still make mistakes in the process and coding ability procedures when working on HOTS questions with aspects of evaluating and creating as well as students with low initial abilities still making mistakes from changing to coding when working on HOTS questions with aspects of evaluate and create. The factors that cause student errors are students' haste in reading, students write down what is known and asked by copying directly from the problem (unable to write in the form of mathematical symbols), understanding of PLSV material concepts that are still lacking, student carelessness in the counting process, inaccuracy in using data and have not been able to use time well.
