Abstract

Carburizing is a heat treatment process on the steel surface by adding carbon as a hardening element at the austenite temperature. This study aims to look at changes in microstructure and changes in surface hardness values in steel after carburizing. In this study, the materials used were ST 60 steel and carbon with an area of carbon particle at 272,128 μm² and 554,621 μm². From this process, the steel and carbon are put into the container, tightly closed and heated at 825 ° C for 4 hours. Testing of carburization specimens includes analysis of carbon particles, microstructure tests and vickers hardness tests. After the carburizing process was done, there was a reduction in the area of carbon particles from 272,128 μm² to 240,886 μm² and 554,621 μm² to 523,283 μm². In the microstructure testing after carburizing raw material, the average solubility of elements in Fe (β%) was 2.52%, the solubility of elements in Fe (β%) with a carbon particles area of 554,621 μm² was 4.30%, the solubility of elements in Fe ( β%) with a carbon particles area of 272,128 μm² was 9.48%. The raw material hardness value was 280.42 kg / mm², the carburized hardness value used an average area of carbon particles at 554,621 μm² was 214.56 kg / mm², while steel after being carburized using an average area of carbon particles at 272,128 μm² resulted in a hardness value of 228, 95 kg / mm².
