Abstract

This research aims to describe the type of condolence strategies and the intentions of condolence utterance expressed by the instagram users for the late of superhero’s character from Marvel named Chadwick Boseman. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The data are taken from Chadwick Boseman fans’s comments on Chadwick Boseman’s instagram account. The data are collected by using observation and documentation techniques. The data then analyzed by using Zunin and Zunin theory (1991) to describe the types of condolence strategies and Searle’s (1979) to describe the intentions of condolence utterance. From the 54 filtered comments, the researcher found six types of condolence strategies on fans’ comments in instagram, they are : acknowledgement the loss (15%), expressing sympathy (13%), taking note the quality of the decease (31%), retelling a special memory of the deceased (9%), taking note a special quality of the bereaved (4%) , and ending with thoughtful words (17%). For the intention of condolence utterance, from the 54 comments the researcher found eight intentions of condolence utterance, they are : representative : asserting, claiming (39%); expressive : praising, thanking, condoling (48%); directive : advising, requesting (4%) and commisive : promising (5%).
