Abstract

This research paper aims to describe and identify the types of registers and the meaning types of registers using in the world of basketball on Instagram pages by Houseofhighlight. This research belongs to qualitative descriptive research. The data of this research are utterances containing register and the data source is the Instagram pages by Houseofhighlight. The data were collected using documentation technique and were analyzed based on the theoretical perspective of Martin Joos (1967) for types of register and the meaning types of registers by Geoffrey Leech (1974). The result of this research indicates that there are 20 registers found in Instagram by Houseofhighlight which can be categorized into four types of regiters, namely frozen register (10%), formal register (20%), consultative register (25%), and casual register (45%). In addition, the researcher also found four types of meaning of registers, namely collocative maening (5%), reflected meaning (25%), affective meaning (25%), and social meaning (65%). The dominant type of casual register and the dominant meaning type of social meaning strongly related to the position of basketball as popular sport and Instagram as one of the most popularly social media.
