Abstract

Self-esteem is a condition of how individuals can accept and feel worthy of themselves. Meanwhile, behaviors that affect low self-esteem can also be caused by the experience of being exposed to cyberbullying. The experience of being exposed to cyberbullying is an unpleasant experience when doing social media activities. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic has made more and more use of the internet and social media. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between cyberbullying behavior and self-esteem of UMS students during the Covid-19 pandemic. The hypothesis of this study is that there is a negative relationship between the experience of being exposed to cyberbullying and student self-esteem during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research uses correlational quantitative method with purposive sampling technique. The subject of this study used active students of the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta with a maximum age of 22 years. Data retrieval uses a self-esteem scale and a cyberbullying scale that is shared via a google form link. A sample of 154 students was determined by purposive sampling and data analysis techniques using product moment correlation analysis. The results of the validation test of the self-esteem scale in the study showed the validity coefficient of Aiken moved from 0.67 to 0.83 and the reliability results on the self-esteem scale of 0.825 and on the cyberbullying scale of 0.901. The results of the analysis show that the product moment correlation coefficient is -0.380 and a significance of 0.000 (p<0.01). This means that there is a very significant negative relationship between the experience of being exposed to cyberbullying and self-esteem. The effective contribution of the experience of being exposed to cyberbullying is 14.4%. Keywords: self-esteem, experience of being exposed to cyberbullying, students.
