Abstract

In every electrical power system equipment, a protection or safety system is needed to maintain in the event of a disturbance. Including the power transformer itself. Because of the importance of the power transformer in the transmission system, it must be protected from interference that causes damage to the network and its equipment. One of the protection systems that can be used on power transformers is differential relay. The differential relay is a safety device against short circuits whose working principle is to compare the incoming and outgoing currents. The differential relay can detect a fault in the transformer and will instruct the circuit breaker to trip. The differential relay can work well if the settings used are correct, the accuracy in determining the differential relay settings can support the performance of the protection system itself. The method used in this research is data retrieval conducted at the Blora substation 150kV with the data obtained processed using mathematical calculations and by simulating the performance of the differential relay with ETAP 12.6.0. The mathematical calculations are carried out by going through several calculations including current transformer ratio calculations, mismatch error calculations, secondary current calculations on current transformer, differential current calculations, restrain current calculations, slope percentage calculations, and setting current calculations. For the CT ratio obtained from the results of mathematical calculations, the primary CT is 300:5 A while the secondary CT is 2000:5 A, this value is obtained by considering the CTs on the market and also adjusted to those used at the Blora substation. The setting current value obtained from the results of mathematical calculations is 0.48 A, while the differential current obtained from mathematical calculations is 0.48 A. The results of the differential relay performance simulation using ETAP on internal faults show that the differential relay works at 0 ms and instructs CB to trip at 40 ms and 50 ms. The results of the simulation of external disturbances are that the differential relay does not detect any disturbance and does not work but there are two OCR relays that work, namely relay 3 at 18 ms and ordering CB to work at 68 ms and relay 1 at 90.2 and ordering CB to work on 130 ms.
