Abstract

Currently in the Covid-19 pandemic, the government provides social distancing rules so that all social activities are limited, including schools closed and replaced with online learning methods. This has an impact on children with Down syndrome, where children with Down syndrome cannot play, socialize and hinder the academic process of children with Down syndrome. The limited activities during this pandemic, the role of parents is increasingly important for children with Down syndrome because they will need extra attention from both parents both in training and assisting children in every development activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the experience of parents in caring for Down syndrome children during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. The sample selection used purposive sampling with a sample of 5 participants. The results of the study can be concluded that the feelings of parents when they have a child with Down syndrome are sad but accept the child's condition and think that all this is destiny that has been given to the participants. The characteristics of the children of the 5 participants were divided into 2, namely social and asocial. During the pandemic, children's learning activities at home are not the same as when studying at school, at home they tend to play gadgets so that parents are more extravagant in supervising their children's learning. Parents teach children to be independent and allow children to play and do activities that children like with parental monitoring so as not to harm themselves and others and not interfere with their learning activities. In raising children during a pandemic, parents experience obstacles, namely dividing time and dealing with children's emotions, but parents have efforts to overcome these obstacles by letting children play with friends or visiting relatives' homes and when children are angry, parents let children's emotions calm down first.
