Abstract

The protection system in an electric power system is very important as a safety when an electrical disturbance occurs. The most common protection system in the electrical network is the CB (Circuit Breaker). Circuit Breaker is an electrical circuit protection device that is used to automatically separate faulty parts, such as short circuits, overload currents, and overvoltages. The determination of the CB capacity value is based on the breaking capacity, which is the limit of the workability or endurance of the CB when a short-circuit current is passed. In determining the breaking capacity, the short circuit fault analysis method is used to determine the value of the short circuit fault current that occurs in the electric power system. This short circuit analysis was performed using a simulation using ETAP 12.6.0 software and manual calculations for comparison. This manual calculation uses the sequence impedance values of the network system components and loads. Based on the results of the analysis, obtained several values of short-circuit fault currents 3-Phase Fault, L-G Fault, L-L Fault, and L-L-G Fault which are different on each bus which are influenced by network system components and the number of operating loads. The value of the largest short circuit current from the analysis results, then used to determine the optimum value of breaking capacity on the CB bus load.
