Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ferrous manganese (FeMn) inoculation on the hardness of gray cast iron, to determine the microstructure photo results and the results of the SAM (EDS) test on gray cast iron material with the addition of 2% FeMn element. The casting process uses an induction furnace with a temperature of 1300-1400 ° C. The initial material used is iron which is then smelted and mixed with ferrous manganese (FeMn), then it is poured into the mold that has been provided. From the hardness test results, it was found that the upper part of the metal mold was 249 BHN, while for the middle it was 318 BHN and for the bottom it was 400 HBN. For the intermediate mold, the average hardness of the upper part is 229 HBN, while for the middle part it is 239 HBN and for the lower part it is 257 HBN. Meanwhile, for the sand mold, the average hardness at the top is 190 HBN, for the middle part is 214 HBN and for the bottom part is 235 HBN. The microstructure test results of the lower specimen showed high hardness compared to the middle and upper parts, both in metal molds, intermediates and sand. This is because the lower part of the graphite element is very smooth and neat and the FeMn element is more effective in the lower specimen. Meanwhile, the SEM EDS test results show that the graph of the FeMn element looks very thin because the addition of relatively few elements makes it difficult for the scanning engine to detect the FeMn element.
