Abstract

This study aims to describe the types and factors that cause student errors in solving HOTS questions in the class XI class material at SMA Batik 2 Surakarta in solving HOTS questions in the sequence material based on Newman's theory analysis. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. Data collection was carried out using written tests and interviews. The research subjects were students of class XI IPA 1 and XI IPA 2 with 6 students as the subject. The data analysis technique was done by reducing the data, presenting the data, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data used technical triangulation by comparing the results of student work with the results of interviews that had been conducted. The results showed that there was a misunderstanding of 11.62%, a problem transformation error of 7.75%, an error in processing skills of 20.92%, an error in writing answers of 74.41%. The types of errors that arise when students solve HOTS questions are: (1) errors in understanding the questions, which include errors in determining what is known and what is asked, not writing down what is known and what is asked. (2) error in transforming the problem, which includes errors in determining the formula to be used, and not writing the formula in solving the problem case. (3) errors in processing skills, which include errors in performing arithmetic operations in problem cases. (4) errors in writing answers, which include mistakes made previously, errors in writing down the final conclusions of the results obtained, and not writing down the final conclusions of the results obtained. The factors that cause student errors are the lack of ability to understand and examine questions, not being used to solving HOTS questions, not understanding the concept of line material and applying the line material, rushing in solving questions, not being careful in performing calculation operations and not checking again. answer, do not understand the calculations used.
