Abstract

The study aims to: 1) find the strategies applied by English teachers in SMP Negeri I Musuk in using WhatsApp as a learning medium at SMP Negeri 1 Musuk, 2) to analyze the problems faced by teachers and students in using WhatsApp for learning English at SMP Negeri 1 Musuk, 3 ) to analyze how the teachers deal with the English learning problems at SMP Negeri 1 Musuk. The study is a descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is the use of Whatsapp Messenger in learning English online at SMP Negeri 1 Musuk. The subjects are English teachers and students of SMP Negeri 1 Musuk, especially students in grade 8. The data of this study were collected using interview, observation, and documentation. Then the data validity technique used is triangulation. To analyze the data, the researcher applied interactive technique comprising data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions/verification. The results of this study show that 1) The strategies used by the teacher in online learning are quite diverse, starting from learning using the lecture method, PowerPoint, text messages that are wrapped in 3 stages, namely opening, core, and closing, 2). the problems faced by English teachers in learning English online at SMP N 1 Musuk are poor internet access poor learning medium, and students’ low participation. 3) to deal with the problems, the school tries to cooperate with the village officials to allow students to use wifi facilities, help students by finding a smartphone that is not used, the teacher provide more time for the students submit their assignments and the teacher opens questions outside of learning hours.
