Abstract

Nanotechnology has been rapidly developed since last two decades. Magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) nanoparticles could be utilized as nanoadsorbent to bond heavy metals ions in waste water. The method used in this research was coprecipitation method. Characterization of magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) by using Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) instrument aims for knowing the existance of chemical bonds in the samples. Besides, characterization of magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) by using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) aims to analyze crystal structure measurement of magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) formation. In FTIR analysis test, in sample A there was no ferrite group formed as MgFe2O4 nanoparticle character, but in samples B, C, and D the ferrite group was formed. In XRD analysis test, for NaOH concentration of 7 M and synthesis temperature of 75⁰C the nanoparticles with a size of 66,4 nm were obtained. Meanwhile, in NaOH concentration of 7 M and synthesis temperature at 35⁰C the nanoparticles with a size of 38,2 nm was obtained. These sizes have met the size range of nanoparticles, i. e. 1 – 100 nm.
