Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know what is the politeness strategy that is applied in Ballerina movie script. This study is descriptive qualitative method that answered the question in problem statement. The data of this study are the utterance in the script of Ballerina Movie that consist of indirect speech act. The technique of collecting the data is documentation. The writer used the theory of Politeness Strategy by Brown and Levinson (1987), The theory of indirect Speech Acts by Yule (1996) and theory of Illocutionary Acts by Searle (1983) as the supporting theory. The result of this study showed that: (1) The Indirect speech acts that occurred in this study are assertive, directive, commissive and expressive functions. (2) Politeness Strategy that appeared in this study are Bald on record strategy, the negative politeness strategy, and off record politeness strategy.
