Abstract

Unemployment is a problem that is difficult to control. Even though it has decreased, the number of unemployed people in Indonesia is still relatively high. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of government expenditure, human development index (HDI), domestic direct investment (DDI), and foreign direct investment (FDI) on the open unemployment rate in Indonesia in 2016-2019 using panel data regression model with the fixed effect model (FEM) approach. The results showed that HDI, DDI, and FDI had a negative effect on open unemployment, while the government spending had no effect. To reduce the unemployment rate in Indonesia, the government is expected to improve the quality of education and health services. In addition, the government ought to increase domestic direct investment and foreign direct investment, in order to support and accelerate job growth opportunities.
