Abstract

Adaptation is a process by which individuals experience interactions in new cultures and environments in order to understand intercultural interactions without experiencing misunderstandings when interacting. Culture shock is a feeling of psychological and physical discomfort due to contact with other cultures. Culture manifests itself in linguistic patterns and in the forms of activities and behaviors that serve as models for adaptive actions and communication styles and culture influences the communicator. This is common in people who move from their original culture to a new culture, such as students from Sundanese in Surakarta in facing culture shock. This study uses the Speech Code theory coined by Gerry Philipsen and uses qualitative methods with the object of research, namely students from Sundanese in Surakarta. Data collection used in this study used interviews by phone (social distancing against COVID-19) to obtain complete information and what researchers needed. The results of the study explain how the Sundanese students process adaptation to host culture, especially in the aspect of speech code.
