Abstract
Interpersonal power is the ability of a person to influence the thoughts and actions of others at a lower level of power. In the Islamic boarding school environtment, new students undergo a study orientation period under the guidance of a mentor. Dominant interaction is carried out between new students and mentors as a method of guidance which is coordinated by Keluarga Santri Pomosda, POMOSDA High School. The purpose of this study is to know how interpersonal power is built in the process of mentorship carried out by the mentors to new students through relation, personal, and message power. This is a qualitative research which carried out in-depth interview as data collecting technique. Five informants who had been mentors in last year’s academic year was interviewed. The result of this study indicates that there are three main steps used by mentors in building interpersonal power: initiate closeness, giving advice, and giving appreciation and punishment.
