Abstract

This research was conducted to examine the effect of the tempering process at a temperature of 350°C with a variation of the holding time of 10 minutes, 30 minutes and 60 minutes on the hardness and microstructure values of medium carbon steel after undergoing the quenching process with water cooling media. The tempering process is widely used to increase the ductility properties of steel. In this study, medium carbon steel was used measuring 30 mm x 30 mm with a thickness of 5 mm. The results of this study indicate that at the variation of the holding time of 10, 30 and 60 minutes the hardness values are 26.1 HRC, 30.4 HRC and 26.9 HRC, respectively. Raw material has a hardness value of 42.5 HRC and a quenching hardness value of 39.3 HRC. These results indicate that tempering changes the martensite phase from the quenching process to tempered martensite which has lower hardness.
