Abstract

Forest is an integrated ecosystem which contains a variety of biological resources whose existence must be preserved and maintained. Destruction of forests in Indonesia often occurs, causing an imbalance in the ecosystem. Indonesia with a tropical climate has many advantages and conditions, especially in the dry season, which makes dry land and water supply depleted. The impacts include drought and forest fires. The existence of forests in mountain areas has a big contribution to the environment and its people. Forest fires also occur in mountain areas. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of examining the distribution of forest areas experiencing drought and analyzing its relationship with forest fires. The method used is satellite image processing using TVDI calculations to produce a drought index associated with the distribution of hotspots. The results obtained from May to October are the areas that have the largest area in July with an area of 9,974 hectares followed by June, September and August. By distribution in that month, the majority of dry areas are located on some slopes of the mountain to the foot of Mount Lawu. The relationship between the drought index and hotspots shows a weak relationship, seen from the calculation of the correlation between the two. However, in September, the hotspots were found in dry areas, so it can be said that there is a link between the emergence of hotspots and dry areas.
