Abstract

The effects of irregular menstruation include infertility, endometriosis, psychological disorders, anemia, increased ovarian syndrome, and preeclampsia. However, there are several ways to deal with irregular menstrual cycles, namely the modern and traditional ways. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the location of residence and the use of herbal medicine to treat irregular menstruation. This study is a quantitative study with a cross sectional approach to the 2010 Indonesian National Basic Health Survey (Riskesdas). The population of this study were all women aged 10-59 years with the criteria of women of childbearing age who answered questions related to the use of traditional medicines (herbal medicine) to treat menstruation not regularly namely as many as 13,423 women. The data collection technique was carried out by interviewing trained enumerators and using a structured questionnaire that had been validated. This study was analyzed using the chi-square test with a confidence level of 95%. The results showed that there was a relationship between the location of residence and the use of herbal medicine to treat irregular menstruation with a p-value of 0.001 <0.05. The conclusion of this study is that women aged 10-59 years who experience irregular menstruation tend to consume herbal medicine to overcome it. Therefore it is necessary to optimize the education regarding the use of herbal medicine for women aged 10-59 years who experience irregular menstruation both in urban and rural areas.
