Abstract

Critical thinking skills are students' abilities in processing information obtained to solve a problem. Basically, every student already has the ability to think critically, but what is needed is to develop this ability so that students are better able to solve problems. This is because the students' low ability to solve problems, especially in story questions. This study aims to (1) analyze and describe students 'critical thinking skills in solving algebraic story problems in terms of the independent field cognitive style (FD) and (2) students' critical thinking skills in solving algebraic story problems in terms of field dependent cognitive style (FI). . This type of research is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The subjects in this study were students of class VII SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Karanganyar. The data collection techniques used were test questions, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used was data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The critical thinking ability test analysis refers to the critical thinking ability indicators proposed by Ennis. The results showed that 1) students' critical thinking skills with the Field Independent cognitive style were able to explain all simple explanations, were able to explain all basic explanations, were only able to explain some of the strategies and settlement tactics, were able to provide some further explanations, and were able to make conclusions, but wrong , 2) students' critical thinking skills with the Field Dependent cognitive style are able to explain some simple explanations, are able to explain all basic explanations, are only able to set some strategies and settlement tactics, are wrong in providing further explanations, and are unable to make conclusions correctly.
